Highway Plan Would Raise Taxes at Least $4 Billion
Friday March 30 2007 9:16
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Republican transportation leaders in the Legislature called Thursday for increasing taxes at least $4 billion to pay for interstate highway upgrades.
Rep. Neal St. Onge proposed raising taxes to provide dedicated truck lanes on Interstate 70, upgraded ports and a boost to public transportation.
Sen. Bill Stouffer, R-Napton, already has proposed making dedicated truck lanes on Interstates 44 and 70, using a 1-cent sales tax from 2009-2018 that would raise $7.2 billion.
St. Onge, R-Ballwin, said Missouri needs to upgrade its infrastructure to take advantage of its location in the center of the country, which makes it a shipping and transportation hub.
"Everybody believes our economy supports our transportation system when, in reality, it's just the opposite,'' St. Onge said.
St. Onge's plan would increase car license plate fees by $15 and commercial truck plate fees by $20. Current fees vary depending on horsepower, weight and where they're used, from $15.75 to $51.25 a year. The state fuel tax on gasoline and diesel would bump up by 4 cents per gallon, from 17 cents, and the state would begin imposing a 2 percent sales tax on fuel. The state sales tax also would increase by half a cent. The proposal calls for all the tax increases to expire in six years.
